Washing

Can you wash cashmere garments?

Contrary to popular belief, cashmere loves water but only if it’s cold.
In fact, regular washing in cold water either by hand or in washing machine will ensure that cashmere garments remain soft and supple.
This process will also prevent cashmere from pilling.

Note : certain cashmere garments with specific characteristics (light, embellished orbrightly colored ones) may not be washable: always check the label on your favorite garment to find out whether or not it is suitable for washing.

How often should you wash your cashmere garments?

It is recommended to wash your cashmere garments on a regular basis; for example, a jumper should ideally be washed after you've worn it three or four times.

How to wash your cashmere garments?

Machine wash cashmere garments

Follow these five steps to machine wash a cashmere jumper, dress or scarf without damaging it:

SORTING LAUNDRY: SIMILAR COLOURS TOGETHER AND SMALL LOADS

Don’t mix colors and avoid machine washing any garments with embellishments (embroidery, rhinestones, studs, etc.). To prevent friction, do not overfill the drum.

COLD TEMPERATURE
(20°C MAX)

Select a cold cycle (20°C MAX).

LOW-SPEED OR NO SPIN

Select the minimum spin cycle (never more than 400 rpm) or a no-spin cycle.

MESH LAUNDRY BAG

Place your cashmere garments in a mesh laundry bag.

SPECIAL WOOL DETERGENT

Use a special wool or cashmere detergent but never use fabric conditioner.

Hand wash cashmere garments

To hand wash your NOTSHY cashmere jumpers, ponchos, dresses, scarves and hats, choose a special wool detergent or a a special cashmere shampoo (under no circumstances you should use fabric conditioner, whichever washing method you choose).

Before anything, separate whites from any colors.

Then fill a clean container with a small amount of cold water (a sink, a tub, or a basin depending of the size of garment).
Add a small amount of detergent and submerge your cashmere garment (don't leave it to soak).

Once in water, gently squeeze or pat your garment with your fingers while avoiding twisting or pulling it. Finally, rinse it with cool clean water.

Now you can repeat the process for each garment, making sure to use fresh water for each new color.

That's it: your cashmere garment is now freshly clean!

Removing stains from
your favorite cashmere garment

If you’ve stained your favorite cashmere dress, keep clam and follow these simple steps: clean the stain immediately using cold water, your special cashmere detergent or a special wool or a special wool or cashmere stain remover. Carefully use stain remover’s instructions and proceed with your garment hand wash or machine wash as per our above recommendations. If the stain still remains visible, we invite you take your garment to a professional dry cleaner.

How to remove excess water from your cashmere garments

Removing excess water is a crucial step in caring for your cashmere jumpers, dresses, trousers, scarves or hats, especially if you would like to hand wash them. Start by placing your garment on a clean dry towel and pat it to remove any excess water. You can repeat the process as needed using another towel to prevent your garment from dripping while it's drying. Keep in mind that you should never wring or stretch it as this would damage the cashmere fibers.

How to dry your cashmere garments

In order to dry your cashmere garments in the best conditions, were commend that you:

  • Position a drying rack away from direct sunlight and heat sources
  • Lay a clean towel flat on it
  • Place your cashmere dress, trousers or jumper on the drying rack

Leave your cashmere garment to dry: you'll soon find it as supple and soft as ever! But be patient as it may take up to three days to dry.

How to store your cashmere garments

Cashmere garments like to be kept in shape, so make sure you fold them neatly (avoid hanging on hangers or coat racks).
Store them flat in a ventilated place, away from light and humidity. Ideally, you should place them inside a cover to prevent them from friction and dust.

You should also take measures to protect your jumpers, dresses, trousers, scarves and hats from insects that love cashmere fibers.
To do so, place a lavender bag or a cedar ball in your dressing room, drawer or wardrobe. To remain effective replace a lavender bag or a cedar ball it every year.  You can also hang a lavender bag on a hanger, or a cedar ball, or place it directly on a shelf: it will repel unwanted insects and keep your favorite clothes neat and beautiful for many years to come.

At the end of the season, remember to wash your cashmere garments before storing them in their protective cover.

Can cashmere garments be ironed?

Some fine cashmere garments, such as dresses, jumpers, ponchos and trousers, will look best with a light ironing.
To avoid making mistakes and damaging the cashmere fibers we recommend that you:

  • Turn the garment inside out
  • Place a cotton cloth between your garment and the iron
  • Gently iron on a very low temperature with a light steam.

This will be more than enough to gently smooth out your cashmere garment. Ideally, use a garment steamer.

Care

How to avoid pilling on cashmere

Even the most beautiful cashmere garments can pill; it's an inevitable process as cashmere is a natural material. Cashmere always contains some superfluous fibers that come loose and create pilling, especially when rubbed. Here's how to limit the appearance of pilling. To prevent pilling:

  • Follow the care advice to preserve the fibers of your cashmere jumper, dress, trousers or scarf; this will nourish the fibers.
  • Avoid rubbing, especially against handbags or any other garments made of thick and rough fabrics.
  • When pilling appears, don't pull on the fibers; use a specially fabrics haver: gently pass it over the garment following the direction of the knit. The best solution remain the use of a​ cashmere comb.

One last tip: remove any pilling before washing, so that the fibers stays smooth afterwards.
This will help ensure that your jumpers, ponchos, dresses and trousers stay perfectly soft for you to wear!

How to use a cashmere comb
